Make your Mark -This camp is designed for beginner artists who have an interest in learning how to draw and sketch — or simply want to improve their skills. We will work with all drawing mediums and paint with temperas and watercolors.

Explore Fantasy and Magical Worlds – This camp will take us on a journey to magical worlds and leave reality behind. We will learn to accept the fantastical through celebrated stories and fairy tales. Dare to believe in fairies, unicorns and mermaids. This camp is out of this world.

Sculpture Art 3-D- Wire, wood, clay, papier mache, found objects–Building all week long.  If your child likes to build, this is the camp! Caution:  You will need a place to put all the sculptures! Sculpture is FULL at the Nacogdoches Location

Isms in Art – We will take a look at art movements or simply said – art styles. We will explore Cubism, Impressionism, Pointillism, Realism and Surrealism. This camp has it all: Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Art History and Famous Artist Facts!

Working with Color – Colors are important in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the color on our walls, our furniture, our cars and while the colors in a painting might be the first thing a viewer notices, there’s a lot more to color than meets the eye. In this camp we will build our vocabulary and learn how colors make us feel. We will mix, blend, lighten, darken and experiment. This camp is perfect for the child who likes to be a rebel. Your child will not be tattooed in this camp.

Famous Artists -  Some of the most influential artists have been women. We will learn about and practice the styles of the following artists: Mary Cassatt (1844-1947), Grandma Moses (1860-1961), Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986), Louise Nevelson (1900-1988), Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) and Jenny Holzer (1950-still working)

Wearable Art- Tiedye (please bring something that is 100% cotton to dye), jewelry making, key chains, duct tape wallets, fashion design, sewing, collage, drawing, painting and sculpture. When we are not creating and designing we will draw, paint and play art games. ART TO WEAR IS FULL AT THE NACOGDOCHES LOCATION!  Please ask to be on a wait list. Thank you.

Once-A-Week Classes

Nacogdoches Location

Mainland Location

Preschool children enjoy art activities that encourage exploration of art materials, reading stories that can lead to unique art projects and learning about their world.

Kindergarten and Elementary art instruction combines art history, techniques, exploration of art materials, cultural references and hands-on art projects that are not copied and give the artist their own unique interpretation.

20 reasons children need art:

  1. Art stimulates both sides of the brain.
  2. 33% of children are visual learners.
  3. There are studies that show that children, who make art, read better and get better grades in science and mathematics
  4. Children learn by using their senses and art is ideal in this process
  5. Children need a place to express themselves
  6. Art promotes self esteem
  7. Art encourages children to give more attention to the physical space that surround them
  8. Art develops hand and eye coordination
  9. Art stimulates perception
  10. Art teaches children to think openly. It represents a culture of questioners more than a culture of responders
  11. Art teaches that there is more than one solution for a problem
  12. Art teaches children to think creatively to solve problems
  13. Children can share and reflect on their work of art and learn something about the world they live in
  14. When art is integrated with the other subjects in the curriculum, children commit more to the learning process
  15. In the process of doing art, the child is exposed to different possibilities, to discover and to freedom, this way they avoid falling into the control and the predictability of the conventional education in the United States of today
  16. Art nourishes the human soul. One feels good doing it
  17. Art brings the cultural resources of the community into the art class
  18. Art involves parents, inviting them to participate as volunteers in diverse activities
  19. Art provides a common ground across racial stereotypes, barriers and prejudices
  20. Art is valuable all by itself

Lisa found this posted on the wall at the Oakland Children’s Art Museum and copied it with permission.

OUR CURRICULUM

Our approach to teaching art is to expose children to different artists and techniques. Children enjoy learning about artists and art history. Teachers will show examples, then put them away so they can create their own piece based on the idea. We teach parents how to see the child’s unique style. Parents are soon able to pick out their child’s artwork in a group of ten-fifteen pieces. Children enjoy learning about art styles, art history and about the masters of past days and those still living. Children begin to compare and contrast artists as they build on their knowledge and they start expressing what styles they enjoy. Children like working with different media and eventually find their artist’s way!

OUR CLASSES

At Artworks we read books, learn about famous artists, practice art techniques and explore different media. Independence and creativity abound in classes designed for your young artist. Children will explore and create with varied media in an environment that encourages self expression and artistic development. Classes are based on a theme or art concept and always include literature. As your young artist grows we will continue to explore basic concepts while incorporating more advanced methods and materials that will challenge their intellectual, perceptual and physical skills as well as teaching them new ones. We paint, draw, sculpt, play, work, think and create. We are inspired by music, literature, conversation and silence. We watch, we listen and we plan. Teachers at Artworks help develop work habits and organizational skills. Teachers also help children to appreciate others, themselves and their world. Join us for a fun art experience!
